President and CEO
Peter Harvey, a native Bostonian, managed health clubs in the late 1970's in Massachusetts, Virginia and the Carolinas for European Health Spas, a forerunner in the industry.
The difference between then and now, says Harvey, "Is that it used to be, 'Why should I join a club?' Now it's, 'Which one should I join?'
Harvey operated 19 Fitness First locations in the metro area and recently decided to downsize, making its only location in Bethesda arguably the best-run, most experienced fitness club the area has ever seen.
Asked his formula, Harvey replied, "Service is the key, and the customer is always right. After all, they pay our salaries. Service doesn't only mean showing someone how to do an arm curl, it means taking an interest and asking them about their day. Members must look forward to their workouts. They want a clean facility where the equipment is maintained and upgraded, the staff is knowledgeable as well as friendly, and the membership rates are low. That's who we are."
Harvey goes on to say, "I believe in being accessible, and I am. Email me and I'll prove it!"
